Question 1

How much does an Air Source Heat Pump cost to install, and how does the £7,500 grant work?

Accepted Answer

A typical domestic heat pump installation ranges between £9,000 and £14,000 before incentives, depending on your home’s size, heat loss, and cylinder setup. However, under the UK government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), eligible homeowners in England and Wales receive an upfront £7,500 grant towards installation. This brings your net out-of-pocket cost down to £1,500 to £6,500—often making it comparable to fitting a high-end replacement gas boiler. As MCS-accredited installers, we handle the entire BUS application with Ofgem on your behalf and deduct the £7,500 directly from your quote—no chasing cash back.

Question 2

Are heat pumps cheaper to run than a traditional gas, oil, or LPG boiler?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when properly sized and paired with modern energy tariffs. Traditional boilers convert 1 unit of fuel into less than 1 unit of heat (~85%–92% efficiency). An Air Source Heat Pump operates at 300% to 400%+ efficiency (SCOP 3.0–4.0), generating 3 to 4 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed. Replacing Oil or LPG: Homeowners typically see immediate annual energy bill reductions of 30% to 50%. Replacing Mains Gas: Running costs remain roughly comparable on standard tariffs, but pairing your heat pump with a smart off-peak heat pump tariff drops heating costs substantially below mains gas.

Question 3

Will I need to change all my radiators for a heat pump installation?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Heat pumps operate at lower, more consistent water flow temperatures (around 45°C–55°C compared to a gas boiler’s 65°C–70°C) to maximize efficiency. n many well-insulated homes, existing double-panel radiators or wet underfloor heating systems work perfectly. If certain rooms require larger surface areas, we typically only need to upgrade 1 to 3 key radiators to larger Type 22 or Type 33 models, which we include directly in your upfront proposal.

Question 4

Will an Air Source Heat Pump keep my home warm during freezing temperatures?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Modern air source heat pumps use advanced refrigerants (such as R290 natural refrigerant) engineered to extract heat from outdoor air in temperatures as low as -20°C. (In fact, over 60% of homes in Norway rely on heat pumps for heating). Unlike a boiler that cycles on and off at intense temperatures, a heat pump delivers continuous, steady, baseline warmth throughout your home. Furthermore, modern units operate at a whisper-quiet hum (around 40–45 dB at 1 metre), making them no louder than a domestic kitchen fridge.

Question 5

Where is the outdoor heat pump placed, and how much indoor space do I need?

Accepted Answer

An air source heat pump system consists of two primary components: Outdoor Unit: A compact fan unit (roughly 1m wide by 1m high) mounted outside on an exterior wall base or ground pad with clear airflow around it. Indoor System & Cylinder: If you are replacing a combi boiler, you will need space indoors for a modern, unvented hot water cylinder (roughly the footprint of a standard fridge-freezer). This cylinder fits into an airing cupboard, utility room, garage, or loft.
